Romanticism:
  • Artistic style that emphasizes imagination, freedom, and emotion.
  • Reaction to the neoclassical writers of the the Enlightenment, that turned to classical Greek and Roman literature and ideals such as
    offer, harmony, reason and emotional restraint that were all stressed.
  • Works of romantic writers
    • simple
    • direct language
    • intense feelings
    • glorification of nature

Realism:
  • Took hold in the West
  • Attempt to represent the world as it was, without the sentiment associated with Romanticism.
  • Realism artists often focused their works on:
    • harsh side of life
    • cities
    • villages


Impressionists:

What's impressionism? Seeking to capture the first fleeting impression made by a scene or object on the viewers eye.
  • Took root in Paris, also known as the capital of the Western Art World.
  • Impressionists:
    • Claude Monet <---- Both of these men brushed strokes
    • Edgar Degas <---- of color side by side without any blending.

Postimpressionists:
    • Also called later painters
    • Postimpressionists:
      • Georges Seurat <--- arranged dots of color to define shapes of objects
      • Vincent can Gogh <--- experimented with sharp brush lines and bright colors
